The Volta Region Chapter of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICWU) has held its annual Regional Conference at Ho, where eight new regional executives were elected, with a call on the union and employers to put aside their differences and work hard to increase productivity during this coronavirus pandemic period.
The Acting Deputy General Secretary of the Union, Mr. Morgan Ayawine, who made the call, noted that the union-management relationship was relevant in industrial operations and more effective, therefore, the commitment and sacrifices to build a healthy business that would be appreciated by all in a peaceful democratic environment.
Mr. Ayawine emphasised the need for every worker to belong to a union, as established by the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), saying employers in the public and the private sectors were aware of the provision, and that it was crucial for workers to understand the importance of belonging to a union.
He said it was very important for workers to join trade unions of their choice to help protect their social and economic interest, stressing that the relevance of unions ought to be taken more seriously, because there would come such a time that individual workers would not be able to address problems faced at the workplace.
The Deputy General Secretary in Charge of Finance and Administration, Mr. Emmanuel Benimah, urged workers to take issues concerning the spread of the coronavirus more seriously, and make themselves available to be vaccinated.
