Students and the community at the Miotso campus of the Central University are living in a state of insecurity following incessant robberies and violent attacks that have rocked the educational institution in recent times.
Information available to The Chronicle, which was corroborated by the school authorities and the police, indicate that these violent crimes are perpetrated by syndicates outside, but have insider collaborators.
Sources at the school, who preferred anonymity, report that though the nefarious activities do occur on the campus from time to time, it went on the ascendency last week, when the school recorded the stabbing of a female student, breaks into cars and stealing.
As the police at Prampram and Dawhenya lace their boots to confront the challenge, the paper gathers that the relatives of students on campus are threatening action to hold the school authorities responsible for anything untoward that would befall their wards.
On Thursday March 25, 2021, at about 1500 hours, a 21-year-old female student was attacked, stabbed and robbed off her handbag and mobile phone by two persons on a motorbike.
Luck, however, eluded them as in an attempt to mount the motorbike and speed off they were deliberately crashed into by a motorist who witnessed the incident.
As people rushing to the scene, the robbers reportedly threw away their booty and fled, leaving behind the motorbike.
Police later arrived and took custody of the exhibit.
A report was that on the same day, at about 1900 hours, under the cover of darkness, one of the perpetrators of the crime was seen at the scene, apparently coming to take away the motorbike, but was arrested by young men who handed him over to the police.
The lady victim, who was issued a police medical form, was treated and discharged at the campus health centre.
Earlier last week, students who were writing a paper and locked their laptops and accessories in a secured car later returned to find the said vehicle broken into and the properties stolen.
The case involving a Burkinabe student, as narrated by the Prampram District Police Commander and carried by the paper, is among the series of criminal activities occurring on the campus.
The Estate Security Officer at the Miotso Campus of the university, Mr Peter Karbo, dilating on the state of insecurity, appealed for calm since the authorities were leaving no stone unturned to ensure absolute security. According to him, management had put in place measures to step up security on the campus.
Mr Karbo went on that one of such was the putting up of a police post to station personnel who will engage in constant patrols. Their presence, he went on, would deter criminals.
According to him, the management had planned to offer orientations in security tit bits to the students and the practice to walking in pairs at all times.
The Estate/Security Officer continued that the school was in the process of engaging hands who would be in plainclothes other than its standing security.
On the modus operandi used by the criminals, he stated that their investigation uncovered that accomplices on the campus relay information on other students.
He went on that the lighting system on the campus was going to be improved as soon as possible, and in the meantime intensify day and night police patrols. A source at the Prampram District Police Command intimated that two suspects, the Burkinabe national and the biker attacker whose name is being withheld, will be arraigned before court today.
Mr Peter Karbo went on that the long term plan was to install closed circuit television cameras all over to monitor every movement on campus. He stated that it had also come to the attention of the management that there were ‘perchers’ at some of the hostels, had register with the school as students, but in reality, do not attend lectures.
