A 27-year-old student of Central University of the Miotso campus in the Ningo-Prampram District, is in the grips of the District Police Command for various suspected criminal offences on campus.
The student, according to the father, was born Hamed Amin, but he is known as Kem Amin by school authorities and mates.
The suspect, a Burkinabe national, had duped several students of huge amounts of cedis and stolen several mobile phones on campus.
The last straw that broke the camel’s back was when he engaged in physical assault of a female student, whom he attacked in her room last Friday night.
While in her room, it is alleged that Hamed Amin surreptitiously entered the female student’s room in the hostel, where he succeeded in grabbing her laptop valued at GHc6,000.
The female student (name withheld), in her attempt to resist the crime, was struck on the head by Hamed with the laptop. Fearing further danger, the lady ran into her bathroom and locked herself up.
The bleeding student managed to make telephone calls to a couple of her colleagues, who reached the school’s management, who immediately reported the matter to the Prampram Police.
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.
The police managed to pick up Hamed Amin at a pub at Dawhenya, where he was chilling on a bottle of Castle Bridge drink. The accused is currently languishing in the cells at the Prampram Police Station.
Hamid is alleged to have attempted to break jail, but an inmate raised the alarm which thwarted his efforts.
As a result the police had to transfer all the inmates to the Dawhenya Police Station for the Prampram Police cell to be secured.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Issah Cantona, the Ningo-Prampram District Police Commander confirmed the criminal acts of Hamed Amin to The Chronicle at his office at Prampram, Monday.
DSP Cantona described the suspect as a hardened criminal who could do worse if he’s not checked.
At the Prampram District Police Command were some of the roommates of Hamid, a staff of the school and his step-father, who could not hide his shock at his son’s criminal acts.
One of the roommates was at the police station to identify and collect his mobile phone which Hamed had stolen.
“Sir, are you Kem’s father?” one of the students wanted to know. Sharply, the father answered: “Who’s Kem? Is that what he told you his name is? He is Hamed Amin and I hear he said he is 17 years old. It’s a lie…he is 27.
“This boy has done a lot of harm to his mother who is spending a lot on his education to give him a good future,” the father said.
When the Commander realised that the suspect’s bio-data differed from what he gave the police in his caution statement, he said the suspect had to be arraigned before court, the step-father immediately went down on his knees to beg for mercy.
The father of the injured female student was also at the police station and insisted on pressing criminal charges against Amin for stealing and inflicting severe head injury on his daughter.
The father said he could not forgive the suspect for the trauma he had put his daughter through, besides the medical expenses he was incurring on her treatment.
Meanwhile, the management of Central University said they had expelled Hamed Amin from the school.
The suspect would be arraigned before court after the police conclude their investigations on him.
