Credible information received by The Chronicle at press time last night indicated that
National Security operatives on Saturday stormed the Tema Port and in a ‘Rambo-style’ halted ongoing discharge of fish from Democratic Republic of Congo flagged vessel (Motor Vessel) MV EL NINO.
Eyewitness account of the event indicated that a certain Ex Warrant Officer, deployed to the port by National Security was publicly disarmed of his sidearm, handcuffed and shoved into a police vehicle.
The objective of the operation is not clear, however, one would not be far from associating it with fish importation.
According to the eye-witness, the Democratic Republic of Congo registered vessel docked at berth 9 and started discharging imported carton fish, which was loaded on five trucks.
All of a sudden, a number of V-8 vehicles zoomed to the spot and the operatives ordered a halt to the ongoing discharge from the vessel MV EL NINO.
The men who acted in regimented-fashion reportedly approached a female tally clerk and demanded for documents in her possession.
With the charged atmosphere at its peak, for unknown reason, the Ex Warrant Officer operative was disarmed, handcuffed and though persons present entertained fear, no one mustered the courage to enquire of what had gone amiss.
Even though there was no introduction, the movement of well built and athletic operatives suggested that a high ranking security officials were present.
At a stage, a suggestion to return the discharged carton fish into the hatches of the vessel was rubbished and in turn escorted to a nearby cold storage facility, which was witnessed by the relevant institutions present.
The sector Commander of Custom Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at the Tema Port, Julius Kanton, declined commenting on the issue when The Chronicle contacted him yesterday.
Stay tuned as reports from the grapevine suggested a showdown and possible legal action against the state actors.
