Farmers at Wawasua in the Sunyani Municipality who were affected by the Waste Recycling Plant Project have denied claims by the Aide to the former Bono Regional Minister; Maxwell Mahama, that the government has paid compensation to owners of the already cleared eight acres out of the 50 acres proposed land to be used.
According to one of the affected farmers, Stephen Gyau, who spoke to Ark FM, and monitored by The Chronicle, nothing of that sort has been done and was therefore surprised to hear Mr. Mahama boldly lying on radio to that effect.
According to him, after their last meeting with government officials and Zoomlion Company in the latter part of 2020, nobody had consulted them with regards to the promises made to them.
President Nana Akufo-Addo, prior to the 2020 general elections, cut the sod for works to begin on the project to handle the waste challenges in the three regions – Bono, Bono East and Ahafo.
The project, which is a partnership between the Government of Ghana and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has come under strong opposition by owners of the land, who want the government to pay them their compensation before works commence.
But, speaking on the issue on Ark FM, Mr Mahama claimed that the government had paid for the already cleared eight acres.
He stressed that: “Government will pay the rest of the compensation to the farmers as agreed within a stipulated six months period.”
He, therefore, called on the farmers to exercise patients as Zoomlion, together with the government, was working on the issue.
Wondering why the farmers are baring teeth at this early stage of the agreement when the stipulated date is not due, Mr. Mahama called on the farmers to trust the government to fulfill its promises.
