Residents of Jinankor in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region have appealed to the authorities to help them have access to potable water.
The Abusuapanin of Jinankor, Nana Attah Paul, told Ark FM in an interview monitored by The Chronicle in Sunyani that the community depends on only one borehole which is not adequate to serve the entire populace.
“We currently depend on only one borehole which is not enough for the entire community,” he said.
He expressed worry that politicians had on many occasions promised them potable water, but none had materialised.
“We have had many promises by politicians, but up till now, we still have not benefited from any of those promises,” he said.
Touching on other challenges facing the community, Nana Attah stated that the residents of the community, in their own way, had put up a structure to be used as a health post, but they were yet to see health workers there. He, therefore, appealed to the Assembly and other philanthropists to take up the issue.
In a related development, the Sustainable Development Focus Ghana (SUDEF Ghana) has called on the government to expand access to potable water in the communities during this COVID-19 era.
The Chief Executive Officer for SUDEF Ghana, Mr. John Baidoo, who made the call to celebrate World Water Day, which fell on March 23, noted that the celebration of World Water Day amid the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores the vital need to guarantee access to water, particularly to those in vulnerable situations.
He said one way to prevent the spread of the virus was to practice proper personal hygiene, by regular hand washing, hence, the need for the government to expand accessibility of potable water in the communities.
This year’s water day celebration was under the theme ‘Valuing Water’.
This is a global one-off day commemorated to draw attention to the importance of fresh water and advocate for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.
