Residents of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality have hailed their Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Nana Appiah Korang, for leading the developmental drive of the municipality.
Nana Appiah Korang is said to have spearheaded a development agenda that has improved the livelihoods of the constituents and ameliorated their plights.
According to some residents, through the able leadership of the MCE, government flagship programmes and initiatives have been fully implemented across the municipality.
Health
The Elmina Polyclinic has undergone total renovation that has given the facility a facelift, while a three-unit bedroom nurses’ bungalow has been constructed at Marine, a suburb of Elmina.
Additionally, a three-unit bedroom doctor’s bungalow has been built at the Komenda Health Centre, whereas an abandoned Kindergarten (KG) block at Yesunkwa has been renovated and converted for use as the Health Directorate.
A Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound has been built at Nsadwir to serve as a first point of health care for the community.
To acknowledge the immense contribution of the assembly to the health care delivery in the municipality, the Health Directorate has presented a citation in appreciation.
Water and sanitation
Community mechanised solar powered water systems have been constructed at Essiam, Nkontrodo, Breman, Abreshia, Koful and Simiw with the view to improve water supply.
Speaking to The Chronicle, the MCE stated that several toilet facilities had been constructed across the municipality in order to end open defecation, which is a major challenge in the municipality.
In effect, toilet facilities are being constructed at Abeyee, Ntsinman, Komenda, Breman, Bantuma, Teterm, Eguafo and Dominase among other places.
To improve the local economy at Kissi, 22 lockable stalls have been constructed with three sheds, coupled with pavement and a modern toilet facility.
Education
In the last four years, educational infrastructure has received a major boost in the municipality under the direction of Nana Appiah Korang as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
For instance, a six-unit classroom block with office, library, stores and other facilities has been built at Essaman United School.
Also, construction of a Junior High School (JHS) classroom block with a one-unit ICT block has been completed and furnished at Abee, while a six-unit classroom block with store and staff common room has been built at Abreshia.
At Abrobiano, a six-unit classroom block with office, store and library and two-seater W/C toilet facility have been completed, while a two-unit KG classroom block with office and storeroom has been completed at Kwesiadum.
A six-unit classroom block with office, store and library and two-seater W/C toilet facility has been built for the the Komenda M/A JHS.
A six-unit classroom block with ancillary facility each has been constructed at Ayensudo AME Zion and AME Zion Primary School at Abrem Essiam respectively.
A new classroom block has been built at the Eguafo Abrem High School to be able to accommodate the increasing number of students due to the free high school policy introduced by central government.
At the Edinaman Senior High School, an 18-unit classroom block has been built by the government to augment the existing facilities due to the high number of admissions as a result of the free high school policy
Work is currently progressing steadily at an abandoned Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) project at Ponkrom, while a similar project at Simiw has been completed to boost educational infrastructure in the municipality.
The Assembly, as at last year, had disbursed an amount of GH¢82,376.00 to 74 students who qualified for admission to pursue various degree programmes at the tertiary level.
The Municipal Chief Executive has personally procured a total of 450 dual desks and donated same to some schools in the municipality to end the ‘no desk syndrome’ in the municipality.
The schools include Abayee M/A, Islamic Primary School at Elmina, Komenda Adelsgate and M/A JHS, College Practice, Elmina Catholic Girls, Elmina Model JHS, Kissi Methodist Primary, and Ponkrom JHS among others.
Road network / infrastructure
Komenda-Juctionto Komenda town as well as the Komenda College roads have been awarded on contract, whereas the deplorable Ayensudo to Abeyee through Dwobor to Agona road has also been awarded on contract.
“There is going to be stakeholders’ engagement with the chiefs and other opinion leaders in the coming days to brief and sensitise them about government’s plans to have their roads constructed,” the MCE said.
The Komenda Zonal Council and the Elmina Magistrate Court buildings have all be renovated to a befitting status, while classroom blocks have been converted to cyber labs at Antado and Saman Berease.
Social intervention programmes
The Assembly has, for the past four years, disbursed variety of economic enhancement items to persons living with disabilities in the municipality.
This formed part of the government’s decision to ameliorate the plights of persons with disabilities in order to make them self-sufficient and independent.
Start-up kit and other supports have been given to some constituents recently to enable them to engage in incoming generating activities, so that they (beneficiaries) could live decent lives.
Election 2020
Many residents have partly attributed the government’s fortune in last year’s election in the constituency to the significant role played by Nana Appiah Korang.
One party executive explained that the MCE worked tirelessly during the electioneering campaign and actively campaigned at market places to sell both President Nana Addo and the party’s constituency parliamentary candidate, Dr Joe Acquah.
“To me, I wish that he will be given the nod to continue as the MCE because the constituency has achieved a lot under his reign and must therefore continue”. Said a constituency executive.
Prior to being nominated as the MCE, Nana Appiah Korang had served as chairman of the NPP in the constituency for three times.
It was during his tenure as the chairman that for the first time, the NPP, led by Dr Nana Ato Arthur, won the KEEA parliamentary seat in 2012 general elections.
His leadership style and exceptional qualities have united the front of the party in the constituency and rekindled grassroot participation which largely accounted for the party’s good performance in the last year’s elections.
It is in the light of these that many are calling on the powers that to retain Nana Appiah Korang as the MCE for the municipality to enable him to spearhead the constituency’s development.
