Ghana have released an updated squad for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome e Principe, but confirmed that a number of their leading players will not feature against Bafana Bafana. The likes of captain Andre Ayew (Swansea City), forward Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace) and midfielder Thomas Partey (Arsenal) will only link up with the team for their home clash with Sao Tome.
By skipping South Africa, it means they will not have to quarantine on their return to the United Kingdom after the international window.
Hoffenheim centre-back Kasim Adams Nuhu has also withdrawn, while Vitoria Guimaraes left-back Gideon Mensah is injured and Hamburg defender Stephan Ambrosius has rejected the call-up, opting instead to play for Germany’s Under-21 side.
Coach CK Akonnor has called up Asante Kotoko defender Yussif Mubarik and former Cape Town City centre-back Joseph Adjei to replace them.
Ghana arrived in South Africa on yesterday, where Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori will link up with the squad, despite having been missing for the last two weeks through injury.
The match against Bafana Bafana will be on Thursday at Soccer City, where victory would ensure the Black Stars’ qualification for the Nations Cup finals in Cameroon early next year.
