The Environmental Sanitation Taskforce of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has picked up 14 people for engaging in open defecation on beaches, in drains and other public places in the Metropolis.
Those picked up were therefore slapped with a GH¢200 spot fine each.
In a statement issued to the media, the Environmental Health Officer of the STMA, Johnson Ayrah, said last Friday, the Taskforce arrested the male and female culprits who turned public places into places of convenience.
The exercise, he said, covered three communities noted for practising open defecation.
He mentioned that the 14 were arrested at Kokompe, Essaman and Sekondi 3rd Street.
According to the team, open defecation had become a norm among many coastal communities in the country, especially those living close to drains and beaches.
Mr. Ayrah said in the statement that open defecation and littering did not make the environment hygienic.
He said: ‘This will not be the last. The public needs to know that there are public places of convenience in these communities; we carry out this exercise, but the people decided not to follow the rule, and preferred the open defecation or free-range. These are unhygienic practices.”
He said the Assembly would do everything within it power to ensure that the Metropolis was kept clean and safe to prevent the spread of diseases.
