Mr Anthony Mwinkaara Sumah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, in the Upper West Region, has said he would work to develop the capacity of the youth in the area in order to make them employable.
Mwinkaara Sumah has subsequently set up a team to work on third party scholarships for the youth who aspired to pursue higher education, whereas school drop-outs would be enrolled under vocational training or apprenticeship.
He has charged women in his constituency to take advantage of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) and apply for financial assistance based on their Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) to access loans and credit facilities from institutions like Masloc, for their respective businesses.”
In an interview with The Chronicle, Mr Sumah assured residents that he would not relent on his primary duties as a legislator and would ensure that he brings his knowledge and expertise to bear at the committee level as well as exercise his role as a watchdog over the executive arm of government.
According to the legislator, he would work collaboratively with stakeholders to improve upon access to health in the area.
“Access to health goes beyond availability of infrastructure to financial access where people are able to seek health care with little or no money at all by using the health insurance cards,” he said.
According to him, inadequate Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, coupled with the absence of delivery wards at some of the existing facilities is an affront to sound maternal health.
On progress made on CHPS compound in Nadowli-Kaleo, Mwinkaara Sumah asserted that out of a total of 48 earmarked CHPS zones, 38 had been constructed so far and said he would work with the district assembly to get the remaining facilities in place.
He also said he support communities that were making efforts to put up delivery wards for their existing CHPS compounds in order to promote access to health services by pregnant women.
“I plan to engage the social welfare to ensure that vulnerable groups in the constituency access the support they are entitled to under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and also engage heads of some health facilities to see alternative ways to raise revenue whilst waiting for the NHIS to pay claims, instead of burdening healthcare seekers with illegitimate fees,” he stated.
