Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Mr. Philip Atta Basoah has presented GH¢10,000 to the management of Kumawu Polyclinic which was hit by a severe rainstorm last week Monday night.
The rainstorm ripped off the roofing of the main block affecting the Drug Store, Non Drugs Store, Out Patients Department, Emergency Unit, Records and parts of the Theatre and Maternity block.
The incident caused extensive damages to medical products, folders, value books and computers, affecting service delivery because the paperless system has broken down as five of the seven computers were damaged by the rains.
Management estimates damages caused to drugs and non-drug consumables at GH¢7,000 and GH¢11,500.
Mr. Thomas Kwabena Opoku, Administrator of the facility, said management had been compelled to provide health services, including consulting, and under trees and erected tents until operations are normalised within two weeks. He appealed for support to enable the system get back on stream.
Dr. Alex Agbanu, Medical Officer in charge of the Polyclinic, revealed that the Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly had opted to reroof the affected parts of the buildings, as well as repair damaged ceilings and electrical works.
He said management will be compelled to refer all emergency cases to nearby the Effiduase Government Hospital or the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital for medical attention and treatment, because in the current state the facility would be able to attend to minor cases.
According to him, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) presented some roofing sheets and expressed the hope that very soon the facility could start full operations.
The Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Basoah, has, in the interim, provided the GH¢10,000 from his MPs Common Fund to contain the situation, with the promise of further assistance from his share of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Fund as soon as the allocation is made.
The MP commended the management for swiftly responding to the situation by adopting make-shift arrangements to sustain healthcare delivery.
Mr. Lawrence Adinku, District Health Director, who received the donation from the MP on behalf of the Ghana of Health Service, thanked the MP for the timely support.
He said the MP had been supportive in the ensuring effective healthcare delivery in the district, especially in the funding of the construction of Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compounds in the district.
