The Assembly Member of the Neizer Gardens Electoral Area in Elmina, Mr Felix Ofori Boafo has organised free health screening for the aged in the electoral area.
The exercise targeted old men and women of fifty years and above to medically examine their health conditions.
It consisted of malaria, liver, kidney and lipid among others, while the men were mainly screened for prostate and other old age-related diseases.
Briefing the media, Mr Boafo explained that due to some socio-cultural practices and other misconceptions, many aged people were often neglected.
“Old age naturally comes with a lot of challenges that can even cause our grandparents to strangely behave, but we often time term those behaviours as exhibition of witchcraft,” he stated, adding “I took their plight into consideration and felt compelled to assist them with the little that I could by sponsoring this exercise to show love to them”.
According to Mr Boafo, it was high time the health needs of the aged were prioritised by the people closer to them (aged) and given adequate care attention. The beneficiaries were advised to sleep under treated mosquito nets to get them protected from mosquito bites, which is the main cause of malaria.
Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke to The Chronicle, expressed appreciation to their Assembly member for the honour done them.
