The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has nominated Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene as the Bono Regional Minister-designate. The nomination has resulted in wild jubilation in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital.
Almost all radio stations in the region have been running commentaries on the positive image the nominee was bringing to the region as Minister.
Madam Owusu Banahene’s name is on the list of 46 individuals the President wants to hold several portfolios as ministers and regional ministers in his second term.
Madam Owusu-Banahene, the current Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), is awaiting the approval of Parliament, following her nomination.
The nominee is one of the very experienced female politicians in the Bono Region and familiar with the socio-cultural and political dynamics of the area.
PROFILE
Justina Owusu-Banahene (a.k.a. Awo) is a 51-year old politician, Christian, educationist and the current Municipal Chief Executive for Sunyani. Born on April 02, 1970 at Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality, Madam Owusu Banahene, until her elevation to the office of the MCE in May 2019, was a lecturer at the College of Education, Berekum.
POLITICAL CAREER
Justina Owusu-Banahene is the National Deputy Women Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). She was a former Regional Women Organiser of the NPP in the then BrongAhafo Region between 2008 and 2012. She also contested as the 2nd Vice Chairperson in the Regional Executive elections in 2018.
The Regional 2nd Vice-Chairmanship position was a straight fight between two party stalwarts – Justina Owusu Banahene and Joseph Mensah, the current 1st Vice Chairman and Regional Director, NHIS.
Madam Owusu Banahene, who was initially tipped by many to carry the day, secured 271 votes as against 285 votes by Mr. Mensah.
Her impressive performance caught the attention of the National Executives Council of the NPP, and she was appointed Deputy National Women Organiser for the NPP in 2018.
In May 2019, when the then Sunyani MCE, Ama Kumi Richardson, was elevated to the position of Bono Regional Minister, after the division of Brong Ahafo Region into three, Madam Owusu Banahene was appointed Municipal Chief Executive. A position she humbly accepted and got 100 percent endorsement from the assembly members.
Ama Owusu-Banahene was a member of the Bono Regional Campaign Team for the 2020 and the 2016 general elections. She has been a TESCON member and Organiser at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) between 2001and 2004. She was also the Vice President for the Danquah-Busia Club at Atebubu Training College in 1995, and Acheresua Secondary School in 1992.
EDUCATION/WORKSHOPS
Madam Owusu-Banahene is a PhD student in Religious Studies, holds a Master of Philosophy in Religious Studies (Ethics of Religion) and Bachelor of Education (Arts), all from the University of Cape Coast.
She completed Atebubu Teacher Training College, where she was awarded a Teacher’s Certificate A in 1995. Owusu-Banahene completed her G.C.E. ‘A’ Level at the Acherensua Secondary School in 1992, and G.C.E. ‘O’ Level from the Techiman Secondary School in 1989.
CONGRATULATIONS
The Bono Regional branch of the Concerned New Patriotic Party (NPP) Supporters, an emerging group within the NPP, has welcomed with joy President Nana Addo DankwaAkufo-Addo’s nomination of Madam Justina Owusu-Bahanene as the Bono Regional Minister.
They commended the leadership of the party in the region, noting the President’s nominee, who is the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, will greatly enhance the fortunes of the party in Election 2024.
“The nomination and elevation of Madam Owusu-Banahene is unsurprising, because she has contributed immensely to the growth of the party, from the polling station to the national level,” the group said in a statement copied to the media in Sunyani.
Signed by Eric Kwame Tabiri, Convener of the group, the statement indicated “the party in the region has witnessed internal wrangling and petty squabbles in the past due to parochial interests and corrupt nature of some key personalities, and we are optimistic the nomination and subsequent appointment of Madam Owusu-Banahene would bring lasting peace within the NPP.”
The statement congratulated the President’s nominee on her elevation, and wished her the best as she takes the highest political office in the region.
