The total indebtedness of GH¢54,190,458.93 of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) continues to plague management, in spite of efforts to reduce it by GH¢9,609,541.07, representing 15.06% of the total debt recorded in 2017.
The debt includes an Internal Generated Fund (IGF) debt of GH¢1,358,459.66; District Assemblies Common Fund, GH¢3,090,508.76; Waste Management, GH¢49,741,490.51.
KMAs indebtedness is owed to several solid waste collection service providers, including Zebtor Martin, Webgold, All States Constructions, Freda FD Enterprise, Waste Group Ghana Limited, Express 2020 Company Limited, Appollo Paints World Paints, Messrs Bonfirm Company Limited, and Juliana Osei Bonsu, which are claiming damages, breach of contract, and recovery of the cost of projects and properties, among others, which stood at GH¢63,800,000 in 2017
The Mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi, who highlighted these in his end of tenure report during the Assembly’s Third Ordinary Meeting of 2020 last week Wednesday, announced that the Assembly had made several appeals to the Central Government, through the Ministry of Finance, to absorb these bills for payment.
The KMA boss reported that the total expenditure from 2016 to July, 2020 was GH¢265,405,016.00, with GH¢77,143,463.97 as compensation for employees, GH¢84,268,330.97 for goods and services, and GH¢103,993,221.06 for Assets.
