The Amenfi East Constituency Executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have jumped to the defense of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Helena Appiah, refuting an allegation that she and the Member of Parliament (MP), Patrick Kwame Saime, preached what has become known in political circles as ‘skirt and blouse.’
The party has also denied that Helena Appiah provided logistical assistance and monetary support to back the NDC parliamentary candidate, Nicholas Amankwa, who eventually snatched the seat from the NPP. The party hierarchy has thus described the allegation as untrue and unfounded.
Addressing a press conference held at Wassa Akropong on Monday, the Constituency Secretary of the party, Isaac Kwasi Ennim, speaking on behalf of the party hierarchy, also denied that the MCE was holding meetings with the NDC candidate at the residence of the MCE.
The press conference organised by the party hierarchy was aimed at rebuffing what they described as a spurious allegation levelled against the MCE and the party hierarchy – that they were the cause of the defeat the party suffered at both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the constituency.
The party, for the first time, lost both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the constituency, and a group of party activists who did not understand the loss quickly held a press conference, where they accused the constituency executives and the MCE of supervising the defeat suffered by the party. The group called for the head of both the party executives and the MCE.
But, reacting, the Amenfi East NPP executives described the allegation as baseless. “It is ridiculous on their part to say that the NDC candidate was holding meetings at the residency of the MCE. We demand evidence for these allegations,” the party executives said, adding, “The MP, MCE, and the Chairman never preached skirt and blouse.”
To the Secretary, clear evidence was that whilst the party lost at other polling stations, “we won massively in the MP’s and the MCE electoral area, so where is the skirt and blouse.”
He told the press that contrary to reports that the MCE did not support the campaign of the parliamentary candidate, “the truth is that the MCE and the MP both supported the campaign with cash and logistics. The Constituency Organiser as well, donated party branded T-shirts to the campaign team.”
Ascribing reasons leading to the fall of the party and the PC in the election, Secretary Ennim did not hide the fact that the candidature of their PC contributed to their lost.
According to him, the parliamentary candidate, Amo Acquah, was imposed on the party. “The candidate presented by the party, first of all, wasn’t the peoples’ choice, so he could not relate with the people and speak their language. The people got angry at his candidature from day one when they realised he has been imposed on us.”
That apart, Secretary Ennim added that the parliamentary candidate did not also prove himself in the course of the campaign. He claimed the candidate lacked the confidence to speak, and could not convince people to vote for him and the NPP by propagating the achievements of the party.
