The police in the Bono Region have busted a bank robbery syndicate, some of whom were reportedly behind the attempted robbery of the Farm Vivian Branch of Access Bank, Sakumono, in Accra in October this year.
These robbers, who were left off the hook when the police at the Accra Regional Headquarters took over that case (Farm Vivian) from the Sakumono police, resurfaced in the Bono Region to continue with the practice.
Reports reaching The Chronicle, though scanty, indicate that on Wednesday December 2, 2020, two members of the syndicate on the radar of police were arrested as they attempted a robbery at the Berekum Branch of the ADB Bank.
A highly placed police source at the Headquarters hinted this reporter that the group had earlier attempted a similar robbery at Wamfie BACCOD, a Roman Catholic-operated financial institution, without success.
However, after their arrest in Berekum, a search conducted on them unraveled some deadly weapons in their possession. These include a sub-machine gun (SMG) and pistol among others.
Police intelligence traced one of them to the attempted robbery at the Farm Vivian branch of Access Bank, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday October 17, this year.
On that day, when the Sakumono police night patrols responded to the distress call and a few metres to the banking premises found a taxi car parked with two occupants, and upon suspicion they could be accomplices to the attempted robbery at the bank, apprehended them.
When their vehicle was searched, offensive implements such as cutters, and a pair of scissors were found in it. Unknown to the patrol team, a man in a supposed bank security uniform was one of the robbers, who, after overpowering the bank security guard, put on the uniform as a decoy.
When the police came face to face with the robbers, who were firing incessant shots, the AK-47 assault rifles they (police) were holding jammed due to inadequate servicing. The suspects were taken to the station, and the Accra Regional command went for them to continue with the investigation.
According to The Chronicle sources, no statements were not taken by the arresting officers from Sakumono. The level of investigation the Regional Command conducted was also unknown, but the suspects found their way to freedom, only to be nabbed again in the Bono Region.
Some of the modus operandi in this enterprise, according to intelligence sources, are chiselling of bank walls to gain access to safes.
A Tema Heavy Industrial Area bank suffered a similar robbery last year, where the criminals first tied the bank’s security guards, disconnected, and took away the closed circuit television cameras and monitors to avert identity disclosures.
The group also ransacked the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM).
