The campaign team of the independent candidate for Bekwai, Lawyer Akwasi Amofa-Agyemang, has respond to alleged provocative activities of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Owusu, in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Bekwai Constituency.
The Deputy Director of the campaign team of Lawyer Kwasi Amofa-Agyemang, Michael Effah, said the incumbent MP and his collaborators had in the past few days embarked on several desperate and wicked activities, aimed at frustrating the campaign of the independent candidate and to allow them catch up from the distant bottom in the upcoming polls.
Mr. Effah, a former Presiding Member of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, in a statement, said: “Our opponent and his supporters have taken the law into their own hands and have had little or no regard for the law and are resorting to violence and smear campaigns with shameless impunity.”
Reacting to what he described as pure lies, Effah said the sitting MP allegedly sponsored Abronye to spew lies on Wontumi TV network that Lawyer Amofa-Agyemang had received some monies from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to finance his campaign.
He described this as “cheap propaganda,” and pointed to evidence that the NPP Regional Chairman, Abronye , was being sponsored by the First Deputy Speaker.
Mr. Effah categorically denied that Lawyer Amofa-Agyemang had been involved in any NDC whatsapp platform, and that the Lawyer’s NPP political persuasion comes way back from the university in the early 1990s, so cannot share the same interest with members of the NDC.
The former Presiding Member said Lawyer Amofa-Agyemang had, since his declaration to run as an independent candidate, campaigned intensively for His Excellency the President to win a second term, and it was unconscionable for anyone to suggest that the NDC would sponsor Lawyer Amofa-Agyemang to campaign for His Excellency the President.
He complained that the camp of the sitting MP had vandalised and destroyed two of the few billboards erected by Lawyer Amofa-Agyemang recently, as part of his campaign, while their own billboards, which were erected months ago, are still standing.
The Campaign Director also complained that some people had removed almost all posters pasted by Amofa-Agyemang’s campaign team across the constituency, leaving that of the incumbent intact.
The campaign team of the independent candidate has, therefore, called on all peace-loving citizens of Bekwai Constituency to be vigilant on voting day, and report any suspicious activities of anybody who comes to the polling station with the intent of stealing ballot boxes.
Mr. Effah drew the attention of the Electoral Commission and the police to the de-facing incidents, and called on them to ensure fairness in order to avoid bloodshed and chaos in the constituency.
He noted that the development appears to be following the trend and trajectory of 2008, hence the sounding of the alarm bell.
The Campaign Director also indicated that even though most of the incidents had been reported to the police, it seems the law enforcement agency was not willing to do anything about it, which situation has emboldened the errant operatives of his opponent.
According to him, if the activities of his opponent are not checked, it could spark off a reaction that could compromise the peace within the constituency, since no one holds monopoly over violence and lawlessness.
He called for the urgent action of the security agencies to stop the lawlessness and to avoid possible violent clashes that could result in loss of lives and destruction of properties.
