The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has resorted to outright lies and fabrications because his campaign has collapsed.
According to the President, Mr Mahama, who once said Ghanaians have short memories, does not have any message going into the general elections and is trying to find his ground with lies.
“It is not good for the former President to choose to ascend the highest office with lies and deceit. And these lies are clear indication that he has seen that his campaign is collapsing in confusion and fabrications, and now outright lies,” he remarked
President Akufo-Addo also expressed shock over claims made by his opponent, John Dramani Mahama, that he (Mahama) begun the now popular social intervention policy, Free Senior High School.
According the President, he never expected the former President to openly throw dust into the eyes of the public on that subject, after stating his position on the policy – that it was not feasible.
President Akufo-Addo was addressing traders and people at the Odorkor Lorry Station in the Ablekuma North Constituency, as part of his two-day Greater Accra tour.
On Tuesday, November 24, 2020, whilst on a tour of some constituencies in the Upper East Region, Mahama stated: “We started the programme (Free SHS) and the NPP came and continued it.”
Meanwhile, addressing a gathering at Odorkor on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, President Akufo-Addo described the statement by John Mahama as “something yesterday which shocked me.”
While reprimanding Mr Mahama for taking Ghanaians for granted on the free SHS, President Akufo-Addo took the gathering through memory lane on what Mahama had said about the policy.
According to President Akufo-Addo, when he promised, in the run-up to the 2008, 2012 and 2016 campaigns, “they (John Mahama and the NDC) said that I was deceiving Ghanaians, and that it was a vote-buying gimmick, and that for it (Free SHS) to be possible, it would take about 20 years.”
He continued: “Not long ago, he said that if he had GH¢2 billion, he wouldn’t use it to pay school fees, but rather he would use it on something profitable. Today, he says that he (Mahama) introduced Free SHS. Are we going to allow the former president to come back to power through lies and deception?” to which the crowd responded with a big “no.”
The President added that the “lies” from the NDC presidential candidate “are borne out of one thing, and that is his campaign is failing to catch up with the electorate. He has seen that his campaign is collapsing in confusion, fabrications, and now outright lies.”
President Akufo-Addo told residents of Odorkor, Mallam, Agbobloshie, Atomic, Dome, Ashongman, and East Legon, all in the Greater Accra Region, to give him and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a resounding first round victory in the presidential election, and an overwhelming majority in Parliament.
“I am looking for a massive endorsement for the people of Ghana for that blueprint which is set out in our manifesto of 2020. So, this year, I am pleading with you, I don’t want it in ‘boom’, but I want it in ‘boom! boom! boom’!” President Akufo-Addo added.
President Akufo-Addo started the day’s activities with the unveiling of a statue of the late Theresa AmerleyTagoe at the Dansoman Roundabout in the Ablekuma West Constituency. The late Theresa Tagoe was the first Member of Parliament of Ablekuma South, before it was split. She served as a Deputy Minister under the erstwhile Kufuor’s administration.
