The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said that people without a message in a contest resort to violence, something he strongly advises against.
His comment comes days after supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed at James Town, in the Odododiodoo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
What was expected to be peaceful walks by these parties last Sunday, turned sour due to the violence, which resulted in injuries.
It is not clear what may have caused the violence, but, according to the police, both parties have written their statements about what started the violence. So far, the number of injured persons is yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of Ga Traditional Area, President Akufo-Addo reprimanded those involved in the act, stating that violence should not become part of the society.
Speaking in Ga, President Akufo-Addo said people cause confusion when they have nothing good to offer. He urged for calm in this period of elections to ensure a peace polls, come December 7.
President Akufo-Addo is on a four-day tour of the Greater Accra Region, which on day 3 saw him visit the Odododiodoo Constituency.
The President began day 3 by commissioning 100 new buses for the Intercity State Transport Company, and then inspected ongoing works on the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange, which is 92% complete.
He then visited Abossey Okai, the hub for spare parts in Greater Accra, to meet and interact with the traders. In his address, President Akufo-Addo said visiting the place always gives him vim.
The place has over the years been noted for sensitive political persuasions as far as elections in Ghana are concerned. This is due to the famous business in the area and how the spare parts dealers can influence the economy of the country.
During every political rally each political party creates a supposed convincing message for the dealers, of which 2016 was no exception.
Addressing a mini rally after meeting with the executives of the Spare Part dealers Association, he said: “I cannot tour Greater Accra without coming to Abossey Okai; it would have been better if I did not tour the region at all. Anytime time I come here and go, I get great vim. It is Abossey Okai that when I come, I realise the youthfulness in me comes out. I came here with a simple message. In 2016, I came to stand in front of you to say lots of things I would do if you voted for me. You believed in me and voted for me. This year, I am not here on promises, but on the records of my performance in the last four years. If it pleases you, I am begging for four more. I’ve done a lot in the last four years, and the next four years will see more good things.”
President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the important role they played and assured them that when the four more for Nana agenda was achieved, he would work together with them to consolidate the gains made.
President Akufo-Addo, having addressed a mini rally at Abossey Okai, moved to James Town to inspect work on the construction of the James Town Fishing Harbour.
The contractor briefed the President on progress made, during which he indicated that 15% of the project had been completed.
This reporter, who was at the venue, reports that a major sea defence was being constructed, as well as cold stores.
The site for the project, which hitherto was engulfed with slums, had been cleared, paving way for work to continue without hitches.
The President had earlier inspected the ongoing work at the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange. He also inspected the construction of the Salaga market, and drove through Makola and Okaishie to address traders.
He also addressed a durbar of chiefs and people of the Ga Traditional Area, and then traders at Tip Toe Lane, before commissioning a classroom block at the Accra Technical Centre.
