The media has been tasked to prioritise creating awareness on cybercrime to ensure that innocent people do not fall victim to the canker.
Dr. Albert Antwi Boasiako, National Cyber Security Advisor, has revealed that more than 75% of the total recorded cases are Mobile money victims, which constitute the highest fraud cases from January to August 2020.
He has called on the media to prioritise the education of the Ghanaian public to minimise, if not eliminate, the rate at which the crime is perpetuated on innocent persons.
He made the call at a day’s capacity building on cyber security organised by the Cyber Security Center, in collaboration with the Ashanti branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Kumasi.
According to him, the media plays a significant role in the fight against cybercrime, because they are the voice of the people in terms of advocacy and changing of behaviour, and for that matter, education is the way to go, as the public read what the media write and watch television.
Dr. Antwi Boasiako disclosed that the Communication Ministry or Cyber Security Center cannot operate effectively without the media.
He added that it will be unfair to use only criminal injustices alone to create awareness, but the need to include the media to carry out the information media.
The National Cyber Security Advisor noted that these cases would not happen at all if the media is involved in the education of the public, and stressed that awareness creation is the way to go in ensuring that the public, especially the vulnerable in society, are aware of cybercrime in order not to fall victim to it.
