The Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has complained of constraints in executing its mandate of educating the public on the general elections.
The Directorate is yet to receive clearance for its annual budget to effectively educate the public on the elections, Mr. Raphael Arthur Wilson, Regional Director, has explained.
He told listeners of Akoma FM’s morning show ‘GhanAkoma’ last week Thursday, that the NCCE was unable to deliver its core mandate due to severe financial and logistical constraints.
Mr. Wilson estimated that GH¢45,000 could finance the annual activities of the Commission, but with less than two months to the elections, the Commission was yet to receive its budgetary allocation.
“As we speak, the Commission is yet to receive its annual budget to enable us to work assiduously in educating the public as part of our core mandate,” he told the host, Kofi Asante Ennin.
He further lamented that “without money we cannot perform our duties.”
Mr. Wilson lamented that inadequate logistics such as vehicles makes it difficult for them to travel through the hinterlands to educate the public.
“Out of the 43 districts in Ashanti Region, we have only 11 cars, to which the government added nine more to enhance education on COVID-19, but just last week, the government withdrew eight, remaining only 12 cars to perform our duties, so we are heavily constrained.”
He said the NCCE was concentrating more on street announcements and targeting information centers, radio stations, churches and schools, and thanked the Regional Coordinating Council, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), the media and the security services for their support.
Mr. Wilson called on the general public to support the Commission financially and logistically.
