Fifty brilliant but needy students in the Northern part of Ghana have received scholarship packages covering tuition, accommodation and feeding from MTN-Ghana.
Mr. Sam Koranteng, Corporate Services Executive of MTN, last Friday presented the scholarships to the beneficiary students at a brief ceremony at the Faculty of Law of the Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (KNUST).
He said the beneficiaries were carefully scrutinised and selected to ensure that the scholarships were given to deserving students.
Mr. Koranteng disclosed that the initiative was borne out of the 20th anniversary celebration of MTN in Ghana in 2016, dubbed MTN Bright Scholarship.
He stated that 300 people had benefited from the scheme since 2018, adding that from the initial low percentage of 18% participation in the application process, the female participation had reached 32% currently.
The Corporate Services Executive noted that the initiative had also shown strong interest in the application process, which, he said, had been highly rigorous.
The Corporate Services Executive disclosed that the launch of MTN Bright Scholarship in 2018 was in fulfillment of the commitment of MTN to Ghanaians in 2016 during the commemoration of Scancom PLC’S 20th anniversary, where the company pledged to award 100 scholarships to students in public tertiary institutions each year for three years.
Dr. Godwin Sabutey, member of the Bright Scholarship award panel, explained that the rigorous nature of the process leading to determining 100 individuals, 50 each from the Northern and Southern parts of the country across Ghana, qualified for the award.
He indicated that from about the 1,900 applicants in the 16 regions a lot of scrutiny was involved in arriving at the 184 applicants who were shortlisted.
Dr. Sabutey disclosed that they had to determine those who were really brilliant but needy from the shortlisted applicants, whose stories were similar to having nothing to rely on while they studied at the universities.
He commended other members whose diligence and commitment ensured the transparent process in the determination of the eventual beneficiaries.
Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, commended MTN Ghana for the educational initiative, and charged the beneficiaries to use the opportunity offered them by MTN’s Bright Scholarship award to study hard and excel at the courses they were pursuing in school.
