The Kumasi Metropolis and the adjoining municipalities have benefited from the construction of 100 kilometres (km) of inner roads under the Kumasi Inner-City Roads Project, as part of the 2020 Year of Roads initiative by the government.
Messrs. Contracta UK has, since November 2019, been awarded the contract, which project and works are progressing rapidly. The contractor is currently working in Manhyia, Nhyiaeso, Subin and Oforikrom.
The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Osei Assibey Antwi, said at the 1st Ordinary Meeting of the 1st Session of 8th Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, that about 12.7km of road had so far been constructed.
He also disclosed that the government of Ghana secured a 36.5 million Euro loan from the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) for the Kumasi Roads and Drainage Extension Project.
According to him, the scope of works include the construction of 2km of the Lake Road, from the Coca Cola Bottling Plant to Chirapatre-Dompoase, lining of 2km of the Aboabo/Sisai Drain, and the construction of a terminal at Chirapatre.
Messrs. China Henan Company Limited, contractors of the project, had so far done about 85% of the lining of the Sisai River, 44% of the Bus Terminal, and 20% of works on the Lake Road. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
The Mayor said the reconstruction of the Sunyani Road Project had been contracted to Messrs. China Geo Construction Limited since 2006, but had still not been completed due to financial constraints.
He said the first phase of the project, which comprises the Apatrapa to Bekwai Roundabout, 6.5km), Agric Underpass, Sofoline Interchange, and the relocation of public structures (Abuakwa Cluster of Schools, KATH Family Planning Unit, Suntreso Police Station, Kwadaso Schools) are almost 95 to 100% complete.
The second phase, made up of the 3.5km road from Abuakwa to Apatrapa (5%), 3km New Bekwai Road from Cultural Centre to Santasi roundabout (1%), and KATH Underpass, are about to start with the installation of traffic signals and road signs, construction of Cambridge to Bekwai Roundabout stretch, construction of four out of the six underpasses along the stretch yet to be done.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi also noted that most of the critical roads in the Metropolis had been asphalted, and that Messrs. Joshob Construction Limited had asphalted about 120km of roads, which include Sobolo Extension, New Amakom, Anlo Fante New Town, Nhyiaeso, Danyame and Odeneho Kwadaso.
The government, he said, had also awarded 50 kilometres of asphaltic works to Messrs. Griner Company, which has currently undertaken 16.82km in the TUC, Atasomanso, Konkromase, Adiembra, Fankyenebra areas and others.
Attachy Construction Limited has also undertaken asphaltic works on the Airport Roundabout to Duase stretch, while Messrs. Cymain Construction Limited has also been awarded 12.5 kilometres of asphalt works on critical arterial roads in the metropolis.
