It appears the excerpts of the contents of Prof Kwamena Ahwoi’s book, ‘Working With Rawlings’, which have dominated media headlines in the last few days, continue to deepen cracks in the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Excerpts of the yet-to-be launched book have ignited a series of controversies in the party, compelling members of the umbrella fraternity to register their displeasure about its contents, which they claim could collapse the party or cause the NDC’s defeat in the December polls.
The Volta Youth Network, a youth wing of the opposition NDC in the Volta Region, which is not happy about the contents of the book, has urged the party to call Prof. Ahwoi to order before his action collapses the party, or causes defeat in the December 7 polls.
“We request the leadership of NDC to look into the gross disrespect that has been inflicted on the foundation of the party, and hope that they will call Kwamena Ahwoi to order,” a press statement registering their anger over the book noted.
“We cannot neglect the dire consequences this may have on our noble party’s history and the upcoming elections if we do nothing to redress this impertinence,” they warned.
According to the NDC youth, they believe that the motive behind the publication of the book was “not only a grand scheme to denigrate the legacy of ex-President Rawlings, but also a well-crafted agenda to push the forces of truth and the ‘Volta Caucus’ farther away from the centre of power within the NDC.”
The NDC youth expressed surprise at the demeanor of the learned professor, saying the content of his book is “outright falsehood” and filled with “damning insinuations” aimed at destroying the hard won image of the former President.
“His conduct does not meet the standard required of a party elder, and the Volta Youth Network is specifically calling him out for censure,” they added.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Programme yesterday, the Coordinator for the Volta Youth Network said if, indeed, the running mate of the party read the entire book before writing the forward, considering the content of the book, then she has some questions to answer.
Even before the angry reaction from the Volta youth could be made public, former President Jerry John Rawlings, founder of the NDC, had predicted that if care is not taken, excerpts of the book, currently trending in media circles in the country, may cause the party to collapse.
In a reaction to Prof. Ahwoi’s book on facebook, the NDC Founder said: “The NDC could, should, and has survived on the authority of the word, but if care is not taken, it will collapse and drown as has been happening on the word of those in authority.”
He wrote: “Much as I find it tiring and tedious to be engaging in self-defense when I have given my all, all these years, I will soon deal with the callous agenda of bile by the likes of Kwamena Ahwoi, who are desperately seeking control of the NDC party.” Investigations conducted by this reporter indicate that the timing of the release of excerpts of the book has created deep cracks in the party, which could affect the fortunes of the NDC and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the forthcoming general elections.
Members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have already capitalised on the numerous information from the book currently in the public domain, and are exploiting same to their advantage.
