The Volunteer for International Development (VIS) in Italy has begun a training exercise for the unemployed at Senase in the Berekum East Municipal of the Bono Region.
The project was inaugurated at Nafa junction, a farming community at Senase, to usher in 17 trainees who will be undertaking training in tactics, practices and mechanisms of organic farming for four months.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Kyidomhemaa of Senase, Nana Owusu Fakyewaa, commended the international body for the support towards the livelihoods of the vulnerable in society. According to her, this was not the only support the VIS had provided the people in the area.
She emphasised that the VIS had constructed a soap factory for unemployed women at Senase in addition to organic farming they had started at Nafa, Amomaso, and other places in both the Bono and Bono East regions.
The Manager of Bomosadu Rural Bank, Mr. Martin Amponsah Nyame, a partner to VIS, said that the project formed part of the bank’s agro business products it supports financially.
He said the bank would be giving out loan facilities to all deserving trainees who will do well after the four months training period.
The logisticsian of VIS Ghana, Mr. Kwarteng James Wood, explained that the development organisation was in partnership with institutions such as the assemblies, schools and other bodies to help transform lives through its programmes.
He said VIS, as a non-profit organisation, will go all out to support the project to reduce rural urban and illegal migration among the youth.
Mr Kwarteng added that the VIS will offer organic farming techniques to locally based farmers selected from the Senase community.
Father Richard Bossman, Assistant Headmaster of Academics at the St. Augustine Senior High School (SHS), advised the trainees to take the training seriously for other members of society to benefit from it.
One of the trainers who has benefited from the support of VIS Ghana, Yaa Kyeremeh, has a mechanised bore hole drilled in her farm to enable her to grow crops all year round.
The trainees were provided with free boots, cutlasses, food and Covid-19 protective equipment throughout the training.
