One person has been killed in Banda in the Bono Region following a scuffle at a registration centre in the area. The deceased, identified as Silas Tanor, is said have completed school in Winneba and is currently studying a programme at a Bible College in Sunyani.
Sources told The Chronicle that the confrontation at the registration center started after some persons allegedly associated with Joe Danquah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the constituency, for unknown reasons confronted a brother of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Ahmed Ibrahim.
The deceased, according to the MP, had come to the area to see his parents and was caught in the crossfire.
According to sources, moments after the incident at the registration centre, the persons involved went to the house of the MP’s brother at Tabie. The Chronicle gathered that the incident reportedly triggered anger among residents of Tabie, who subsequently mounted roadblocks in an attempt to avenge the attack.
The MP for Banda told the media: “The brother of the NPP parliamentary candidate was arrested with Invincible Forces and vigilantes with ammunition and guns causing mayhem and disturbances at the registration centre.
According to him, the military, police and immigration team released him just thirty minutes after his arrest. “So, they brought the exhibits to the police station without the culprits. And this was upon the intervention of the District Chief Executive,” he is reported to have said. “So, after setting these guys free, they went back to the registration centre and they were all jubilating and claiming that they [were] in power and will teach the NDC where the power lies.”
He continued: “I thought it was a joke. The following day, the parliamentary candidate, together with his brother who was arrested and later released, went to my house, attacked my brother in full glare of the police, beat him to the point that they thought he was dead, and they left him there. Then he was sent to the hospital and is receiving treatment.”
According to the MP, after that, the community organised in the area and said that the car which came to do this should not pass there again, and that orchestrated the mounting of barriers in other communities. The police have restored calm in the area. The Chronicle, however, gathered that some police officers have been injured as a result of the scuffle.
When The Chronicle contacted the Police Public Relations Officer for Bono Region, Chief Inspector Augustine Oppong, he confirmed the incident, but added that he could not give details until a later time.
