The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ada West, Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi, has confirmed the contraction of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) by seven students of the Ada Senior High Technical School (ASTEC) in his area.
In a telephone conversation, Mr Akrofi said the infected students had been moved out of the school to a location where they were receiving treatment from medical experts.
Last Thursday, it was rumoured that parents had stormed ASTECH to demand the release of their wards, following the spread of the Coronavirus.
The Chronicle gathered from an insider that the virus was detected after a male student’s blood sample showed signs.
The insider said, immediately, contact traces of the student and teachers revealed that other six students had been infected.
News of the dreaded Coronavirus at ASTECH drove fright among residents of Sege and students of the school, with most parents expressing anxiety at getting their wards withdrawn home.
Confirming the situation at ASTECH, Mr Akrofi was of the view that the virus might have been imported from the home of the initial carrier into the school.
He was quick to say that the parents of the student who ignorantly infected his mates were cooperating with the school authorities after they were notified.
“Security has been beefed up to ensure that no outsider enters the school or a student sneaks out.
“Additionally, plans are far advanced by the District Assembly to fumigate the entire school for the second time,” he explained.
Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi added that the school authorities were ensuring that all hygiene and safety precautions were observed to the letter.
“I want to urge parents not to panic as the situation is under control and their children are safe,” he assured all anxious parents and guardians.
