The Akatsi North District Assembly in the Volta Region has paid off the huge electricity bills owed by the local Water and Sanitation Board, which affected constant supply of water to the residents of Ave-Dakpa, the district capital.
The bill, which ran into several thousands of cedis and has accumulated over the years, forced the Electricity Company of Ghana to disconnect power supply to the plant that pumps water from a mechanised borehole for supply to the community and its environs.
A representative of the assembly, who disclosed this during the inauguration of Generational Thinkers of Ave-Dakpa (GTAD), a local think tank that has been formed to spearhead development of the town and the district as a whole said since the population of the town is fast expanding, the assembly is also planning to sink two additional boreholes to complement the existing one.
The district, which was carved out of the then Akatsi District in 2012, has also started the construction of the Ave-Dakpa town roads, which they hope to tar.
The assembly is currently constructing the drainage systems on the road from the main Ho-Aflao road to the local Senior High School, Ave Senior High School.
The road, which is in terrible state, also leads to the main tourist centre in the town, the Ave-Dakpa Crocodile Pond, which houses several crocodiles that are friendly to humans.
Upon the completion of the road, it would be easy for tourists to visit the crocodile pond, which was constructed by Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s government in the early 1960s, to serve mainly as source of water to the town, before the crocodiles were brought in.
Construction work has also started on the Togbui Nyemekor Glakpe Street, which leads to the palace of the paramount chief.
The Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for Akatsi North, Mr Peter Nortsu-Kotoe have also started the construction of a modern palace for the town.
Upon completion, the new palace would serve as the home for the paramount chief, Togbui Nyemekor Glakpe and all future paramount chiefs for the area.
The president of Generational Thinkers of Ave-Dakpa (GTAD), Mr Tony Quist, on his part, said the think tank has been certified by the Akatsi North District Assembly to support the development of Ave-Dakpa, the district capital and beyond.
He paid glowing tribute to their fore-bearers, who way back in 1976/77, conceived a similar idea of organising the citizens and residents of Ave-Dakpa into the “Ave-Dakpa Youngsters’ Club” for unity and development.
“A nation which does not honour its heroes, they say, is not worth dying for and so we thank all of those fore-bearers for the great thoughts and efforts,” he said.
Tony Quist said his administration would liaise effectively with the District Assembly, unit committees, NGOs and the traditional authority to develop Ave-Dakpa and surrounding communities.
He called on all well-meaning citizens and residents, both home and abroad, who hail from the traditional area to come on board and help in developing the town.
Irrespective of our religious backgrounds, socio-economic status, gender or political affiliations, we need everybody to join us, for it is in unity and peace that we can easily win the fight against poverty, hunger and starvation”, he said.
President Quist also promised to revive communal and self-help spirit of the people for speedy development in the areas of education, health, sanitation, agriculture, youth development and job creation.
Tony Quist on behalf of the association promised to build an ultra-modern community centre through contributions from individuals and that, very soon fundraising activities would start in all parts of the country to solicit support from the citizens towards the execution of the project.
Professor J.A.M. Awudza, a native of the town and a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) pledged the support of all stakeholders, including professionals, in promoting the agenda of GTAD to develop the community.
The paramount chief of Ave-Dakpa, who is also the President of Ave Council of Chiefs, Torgbui Nyamekor Glakpe V, lauded the move and assured participants of the support of chiefs and elders in achieving the aims of the Association.
Torgbui Nyamekor advised the GTAD to unite for development and to avoid the temptation of indulging in partisan politics and chieftaincy matters in the area.
To support the work of the executives of the Association, a nine-member team of chiefs, elders and youth was formed.
They are; Torgbui Awuku, Torgbui Adzesam, Professor J.A.M. Awudza, Joseph Dzamesi, Dora Boitey, Vicky Zugah, C.C. Ahiagbede, T.K.D. Awudi and Newman Kpogo.
