The Berekum Traditional Council in the Bono Region has banned on all forms of political campaigns in Berekum and its environs. The Council has indicated that the decision was taken following the deliberate disregard for the traditional authority by politicians.
There is an impasse between the Traditional Council and the Assembly over the construction of a public toilet at the Berekum lorry station, led by the Berekumanhene, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo, with support from the Berekuman Association abroad.
The demolition of an old dilapidated toilet facility at the Berekum lorry station for a new one to be constructed led to a court case against Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo by the Berekum Municipal Assembly at the Sunyani High Court.
Earlier this year, the Traditional Council boycotted the 6th March parade organised by the Municipal Assembly.
The linguist of the Queenmother of the Berekum Traditional Area, Nana Akosua Ameyaahene, Kwame Darko, noted that the continued disrespect of Nananom by politicians had compelled the Council to take the decision.
He recalled that recently, the Bono Regional Minister refused to invite Nananom to be part a workshop at Berekum, a clear indication that they (politicians) are, indeed, not recognising the authority of the Berekum Traditional Council.
“The Berekum Traditional Council has banned all political parties from campaigns and all political activities. This is because the MCE, Mr. Kofi Adjei, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mr. Joseph Baffour Awuah, and the Regional Minister, Madam Evelyn Ama Kumi Richardson, have no respect for the Traditional Council. Recently, the Regional Minister was here to cut sod for the construction of a market, but she never informed the Traditional Council. We wanted to settle the impasse with the Municipal Assembly over the construction of the toilet at the main Berekum lorry station, but they are not ready,” he said.
