Confirmed cases of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Bono Region have risen to 96, after 78 new cases of the disease were recorded in the latest update by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Eight out the total number are exhibiting mild symptoms and are in the treatment centers, while the remaining 58 are mainly asymptomatic and are self-isolating.
Of the 96 cases, 46 are health workers working in different health facilities in different districts. They are mostly asymptomatic or recovered, except four who are showing mild symptoms and are part of those being managed at the treatment centers.
According to the GHS, the Ahafo Region has recorded 36, while the Bono East Region has a total of 142 cases of the Coronavirus.
Addressing a press conference in Sunyani, the Acting Bono Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr Kofi Amo-Kodieh, said as at July 7, 2020, a total of 2,949 cases had been suspected of Covid-19, including 302, through the routine surveillance system, and 2,647 through the enhanced surveillance system.
According to him, samples were taken for these persons and feedback received for 1,519, out of which 81 tested positive for the Covid-19. “There are 1,431 laboratory results that are pending,” he said.
Dr Amo-Kodieh said a total of 577 contacts had been identified for the earlier detected cases, of which laboratory samples were taken as part of their management.
“283 laboratory results have been received of the 577 contacts, and 15 have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the cases for the region to 96,” the Regional Health Director said.
Giving a breakdown of districts in the region with recorded cases of the Covid-19, Dr Amo-Kodieh said the Wenchi Municipality had the highest number of cases with 42, while the Banda District had the least of one case.
The rest are, Berekum East 2, Jaman South 4, and Sunyani Municipality 5. Others are, Dormaa Central 7, Jaman North 10, Sunyani West 10, and Berekum West 15.
Dr Amo-Kodieh said Dormaa West, Dormaa East and Tain were the only districts in the Bono Region without any recorded case of the Covid-19.
Dr Amo-Kodieh said active contact tracing was still ongoing, and the region was still managing the outbreak through the routine and enhanced surveillance systems, as well as social mobilisation and risk communication, in collaboration with partners, including the media.
According to the regional health boss, the current trend of cases in the Bono Region clearly depicts local transmission, and, therefore, it was very important everybody paid particular attention to the safety protocols outlined by President Nana Akufo-Addo
“We are encouraging everybody to stay at home if he or she has no business out of the home. If you have to step out of your home, then, please, remember to be in a face mask, which is supposed to be worn over the nose and mouth,” he said, and added that people must observe social distancing at all times.
“Then ensure that you consistently maintain a distance of more than one metre with any one you interact with. In all these, we encourage you to, at all times, wash your hands with soap and running water. In the absence of soap and running water, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser to rub your hands,” he said.
Dr Amo-Kodieh urged the public to consistently eat balanced diets rich in fruits and vegetables, and consume generous amounts of fluids while exercising regularly. “If we all keep to the safety protocols, we will help stop the Covid-19 outbreak,” he assured.
