President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has directed Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and all state-owned agencies to prioritise the purchase of locally assembled vehicles.
Effective July this year, the President has directed the aforementioned institutions that desire to purchase cars to consider the purchase of locally assembled vehicles as the first option.
This was contained in a statement signed and issued by the Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare. “This policy/decision will not only help industrialise the economy, but also boost employment, encourage investment, and help government preserve foreign exchange,” the statement said.
The Trade Ministry, the statement added, would provide the needed information on the companies that are assembling vehicles in the country.
Background
About two years ago, Ghana signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nissan, a Japanese multinational automobile company, to establish an assembly plant in Ghana.
Also, Ghana has similar MoUs with Toyota and Volkswagen, which have all commenced business operations in the country.
During the signing of the MoU between Ghana and Volkswagen, a German automobile giant, President Akufo-Addo promised the government’s preparedness to support the company.
He said: “I assure Volkswagen and its local assembler in Ghana of the full support of government in creating an enabling environment and incentive framework to make their investment a major success.”
The lack of an industrial revolution of the African economy is mostly considered a bane that has militated against the development of many African countries, including Ghana.
The government’s decision to expand the economy through industrialisation, which has led to the assembling of vehicles in the country, has been hailed.
The development is also going to support the indigenous car manufacturer, Katanka Automobile, which has been struggling for recognition by governments despite demonstrating that it has the capacity produce to feed the Ghanaian market when supported.
