The minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta says government remains fully committed to its promise of developing the road sector of the economy.
To fulfil the promise, government, he said, is currently executing a lot of projects in the road sector to improve road transport across the country.
MrAmoako Atta made this known in Cape Coast during an engagement with the media upon his visit to the region to inspect some road projects.
According to him, government’s desire to transform the sector has seen tremendous and massive infrastructure developments including the construction of interchanges.
MrAmoako Atta stated that: “For the first time in the history of the country, four interchanges are being constructed simultaneously this year.”
The Tamale, Pokuasi, Sofoline and the tier three of the Tema roundabout interchanges are the main ones being constructed simultaneously.
Central Region Roads in perspective
The Central Region has a total of Five Thousand Six Hundred and Ninety-Five 5,695 Kilometres of road. Out of the total, MrAmoako Atta mentioned that 109 road projects have been awarded on contract across the region.
Notable among the projects, he said, were the construction of the Twifo Praso Bridge, Cape Coast inner-city roads, as well as the Cape Coast to TwifoPraso road.
According to the Minister, 28 projects of the 109 were under Highways, 55 under feeder roads and 26 being managed by urban and town roads.
All the projects, he said, were being tackled simultaneously, adding that “Central Regional roads are being worked on with a high level of seriousness”.
Mr Amoako Atta gave an indication that additional 89 different road projects have been identified in the Central Region and were being worked on at various procurement processes. However, the minister did not specifically mention any of such roads to the media.
Payment of road contractors
Government, Mr Amoako Atta explained, has designed an elaborate plan that effectively and professionally handles payment system of road contractors.
This, he said, has partially cured the syndrome of non-payment of road contractors, which has long been the bane of contractors in the country.
Per the elaborate payment system, contractors, he mentioned, were greatly motivated as the government has demonstrated goodwill and commitment to paying them
He said “since January, no road under construction has seen the contractor abandon the site,” adding that “Government would continue to keep them on site.”
He further expressed the readiness of his office to monitor all roads projects under construction so as to ensure that they get to successful ends to promote development.
Last year, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declared that the road sector was going to witness massive infrastructural development in the country this year (2020).
He stated that his government was committed to aggressively embarking on numerous projects in the road sector to aid the development drive of the country.
