Senior Journalist Kwesi Biney, who contested the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahanta West Constituency during the primary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) last weekend, has told Ogya FM, an Agona Nkwanta-based radio station, that some of the delegates had returned the ‘envelopes’ he gave them.
According to him, the delegates have decided to return the envelopes, which were meant to cover their transport to the voting centres, when he failed to win the bid to represent the party in the December parliamentary elections.
The magnanimity shown Mr Kwesi Biney, a former District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, runs contrary to that of other delegates in some of the constituencies who had to be chased to return items they had taken from candidates, yet failed to vote for them.
Biney ran an issue-based campaign and went into the race with the incumbent Legislator, Kojo Kum, with the strong assurance and hope to win the contest.
But, in the end, the votes he secured were not enough to truncate the political ambition of his opponent. Biney secured 249 votes as compared to 427 secured by his opponent.
According to Biney, he did everything possible to convince the delegates to keep the envelopes since it was meant to cover their transportation, but they insisted that they cannot keep it knowing very well that he had lost the primary.
This attitude, he continued, showed how much the delegates cared and wished he had won.
He said, he had wanted to come and serve by using political power to influence decisions and policies.
Asked by the host whether he had called to congratulate his opponent, Biney answered: “No. I don’t have to. He has already won and nobody disputes it so far. So why should I call?”
