The chiefs and people of Asuofiri, Esereso and adjoining communities in the Wenchi Municipality in the Bono Region, have, for the first time, been connected to the national electricity grid.
The Unit Committee Chair and Member of the Council of Chiefs, Nana Opanyin Antwi Anthony, who spoke on behalf of the chiefs and people, said words could not describe their joy after decades of waiting for electricity.
Nana Antwi, therefore, assured the government of their votes in the upcoming 2020 general elections as a sign of appreciation. He further asked for the construction of roads from their community to link Sunyani.
The Assembly Member for the area, Mr Mustapha Musah, expressing the joy of the people, said “it is a new dawn in the history of the beneficiary communities.”
The government of Ghana sponsored Self Help Electrification Project (SHEP) funding was initiated by the Ministry of Energy through the lobby of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi and Minister for Planning, Prof George Gyan-Baffour, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Wenchi, Dr. Prince Kwakye Afriyie
Commissioning the project, Dr. Kwakye Afriyie said the project was in fulfillment of the government’s promise and commitment to extend electricity to the rural areas, and improve the living conditions of the citizenry.
According to the MCE, the project was initially awarded in 2013 and abandoned under the previous government, but re-awarded in 2017 by the present government.
Dr. Kwakye Afriyie debunked assertions that the project was funded by a private individual, and challenged any such “philanthropist” to show up with documentary proof for public notice and appreciation.
He commended the youth who volunteered to erect over 76 electricity poles from the grid source to the community to actualise the project.
He disclosed that a Junior High School block under construction at Asuofiri at the time of the visit was one of the 22 Middle Belt Development Authority projects spread across the Municipality under the One Constituency, One Million Dollars initiative, also lobbied for by the MP.
Communities such as Subinso I, Subinso II, Branam, Abotareye, Asuogya, Buoku, amongst others, would benefit from toilets, classrooms, and durbar ground facilities separately.
The MCE donated veronica buckets, hand sanitisers, liquid soap, and tissues, among others to the Asuofiri, Esereso, and some adjoining communities with the MP’s support to help the fight the Coronavirus.
The Area Supervisor of the National Electricity Development Company (NEDCo)/Volta River Authority (VRA), Joseph Akwei, educated the people on how to save energy while cautioning them against illegal connections.
