The Ashaiman District Court, presided over by His Worship Charles Boateng, has remanded a Mechanical Technician with the Tema Oil Refinery into police custody for alleged murder.
According to the brief facts read at the court by Chief Inspector P. Okese, Thomas Kweku Oppong, 37, intentionally and unlawfully fired a pump action gun to the chest of Kwame Huzzey, 49, a security guard with Green House Ghana Limited, an umbrella company under which several factories are being built at Shai Hills in line with the government’s programme ‘One District, One Factory’ (1D1F).
The prosecution said at about 4.30pm on May 13, this year, Kwame Huzzey, who had closed from work, asked his relative, who had visited him, to accompany him to deliver a message from his employer to Thomas Oppong, who lived in an uncompleted single room building on the same land as DBS Roofing Sheet Company, which is under the 1D1F programme.
Chief Inspector Okese said Kwame Huzzey met the accused helping his wife pound fufu in front of his house.
“Kwame Huzzey questioned the accused on why he was still trying to complete his single room attached to the two uncompleted single rooms on the same land a roofing sheet company was being built. Accused, without giving any reason, entered his room, took his pump action gun and shot Kwame Huzzey in the chest from a distance through the main door. Kwame Huzzey fell and bleed profusely,” prosecution narrated.
The relative of Kwame Huzzey, who was standing 10 feet away, Chief Inspector Okese said, rushed to carry the injured to hospital, but another gunshot from the accused scared the relative and other workers at the site compelling them to take cover.
“Accused parked a few of his clothing into his pickup vehicle, but in his attempt to escape with his wife and children, the vehicle remained in mud. He took his wife and children to someone’s house, and he fled to a friend at Mobile, a suburb of Afienya, where he deposited the pump action gun after telling the friend that he was attacked by land guards.
“Accused went to the EMEF Police Station at 9.30pm that same day to lodge an assault case. However, his incoherent statement gave him out, so he was arrested and sent to the Afienya Police Station. He led the police to his friend’s house where the gun was retrieved.
“The police conveyed Kwame Huzzey to the Tema General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Chief Inspector Okese told the court.
He told the court that the case is still under investigation.
