The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA), on Wednesday, arrested 25 children for street hawking various food items.
Albert Boakye Okyere, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), told The Chronicle on the telephone that the activities of the children were in violation of President Akufo-Addo’s directives, explaining further that the children were being exposed to the deadly Coronavirus.
In order to slow the spread of the virus, the President directed the temporary closure of educational institutions, and further imposed a ban on public gatherings.
The MCE, based on this, expressed surprise at why some parents would take advantage of the long stay of their children at home to unlawfully engage them in trading in public places like markets and lorry terminals.
Therefore, during a routine operation with the Ashaiman District Police and ASHMA taskforce to ensure strict compliance of President Akufo-Addo’s directives, Mr Okyere said: “The team moved to the markets where these 25 children were seen hawking various food items and chilled sachet water.
“They were detained at the Municipal Police Command for hours for investigations to go on.”
Later in the day, he said, the parents of the children were invited to the Divisional Police Command, where they were cautioned to stop engaging the children in trading in public.
“The parents were warned of possible prosecution should the taskforce see their children trading in the markets and lorry stations, or any public place during this period when children are expected to stay at home,” Mr Okyere added.
The exercise, he concluded, would continue unabated, but unannounced.
