The confirmation of President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly in the Western Region is expected to see fireworks today.
Benjamin Kesse, Constituency Secretary of the party and former Presiding Member has been nominated by the President after the dismissal of Gilbert Kenneth Asmah, the former MCE, from office.
The Chronicle understands supporters of the dismissed MCE who are not happy with his removal from office have vowed to vote against the president’s nominee, Benjamin Kesse
At a press conference held in Tarkwa on Monday, the supporters insisted they would vote against the nominee. Bosco Bosco Narkaah, a leading member of the ruling party in the Tarkwa-Nsuem Constituency, accused political heads in the region of plotting the downfall of the former MCE.
Bosco Narkaah said there was no way the President’s nominee would get the required two thirds majority to make him the MCE. He based his claim on the fact that the same Benjamin Kesse failed to secure the required votes to become a Presiding Member when he was nominated for the position.
It is on record that the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly has no PM, after Benjamin Kesse, who has now been nominated for the MCE position, failed to get the nod from the assembly members.
Three rounds of voting to confirm him as PM of the Assembly floundered.
The Tarkwa Nsuaem Assembly has 41 elected members, out of which 18 belong to the camp of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Following the failure of Benjamin Kesse to secure the required two thirds majority, Gilbert Asmah, who was then in office as MCE, was accused of conniving with the government appointees and the opposition elected Assembly Members to vote against Benjamin Kesse as PM.
This development led to a deep crack within the camp of the then MCE and that of Benjamin Kesse.
Signals picked up by The Chronicle indicate that if the accusation that the dismissed MCE played a role in the failure of Benjamin Kesse be voted for as PM, then Kesse has a difficult mountain to climb in his confirmation exercise as MCE today.
