The National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, aka Nana B, has called on the security agencies, especially the police, to arrest Major Boakye-Djan (Rtd), a former member of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), for questioning over his comment that the Akufo-Addo government is walking Ghana into a civil war.
In an interview with Okay FM, an Accra based private radio station, Major Boakye-Gyan, who is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said most of the civil wars that occurred in post-colonial Africa came on the back of disputed elections, and that the Akufo-Addo government wants to walk Ghana into a civil war with the insistence on compiling a new voter register.
According to the former spokesman for the AFRC, the current administration was elected on the register with the biggest margin in the electoral history of the country, asking, what has gone wrong? To him, the NPP wants to rig the elections, that is why it is insisting on the new register, and that the figures had already been cooked.
Reacting to Major Boakye-Gyan’s outburst, Nana B condemned what he described as ‘war mongering,’ and called on the police to arrest him for interrogation.
According to the NPP youth leader, the allegation made by Boakye Djan was very serious and should not be glossed over by the state because of his the involvement in a past coup d’état.
“Major Boakye-Djan, given his past involvement in coup [a] d’état: given his motive and choice of words against the EC’s legitimate exercises make it imperative that the police arrest, question and caution him,” he said.
On the ex-soldier’s justification on civil unrest, Nana B asserted that “the analogy given by Major Boakye-Djan – that a communicator of the NPP had said the NPP will win the 2020 elections with 1.3 million votes margin – is untenable and flawed, because in 2016, former President Mahama made [a] similar projection to the effect that he will have a one touch victory, but the outcome was catastrophic for him. So this is no proof of an intent by the NPP and EC to rig the election.
“The EC has not breached any law, and at all times they have acted according to the dictates of the 1992 Constitution and the act that established it. If anybody has any contrary view, the person must proceed to court. The NPP has had several disagreements with the EC, but never threatened to visit mayhem or civil war on Ghanaians.
“It does appear that the NDC has a sinister motive for the upcoming elections. This is the second high profile person in the NDC to assert that Ghana shall witness civil unrest if the EC carries through its intentions to compile a new voter’s register. It would be recalled that the flagbearer of the NDC, Mr. Mahama, a couple of months ago, equally asserted that if the EC refuses to listen to his party and goes ahead to compile a new register, there will be chaos, and when that happens, the EC must assume responsibility for it,” he said.
