Yesterday, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, commissioned a four-block accommodation unit, comprising 64 apartments for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The facility, ‘New Douala Barracks,’ is part of the Akufo-Addo led government’s barracks regeneration project launched in 2017 to address the accommodation challenges of the GAF.
It is also to ease the discomfort the troops and their families have endured over the years in the various barracks.
“Today, 64 families will be the beneficiaries of four new blocks of 64 apartments. Each of these apartments has a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and standard sanitary facilities. It is gratifying to note that similar ongoing accommodation projects are nearing completion” at the various garrisons across the country.”
President Akufo-Addo urged the military high command to ensure that the accommodation units were well maintained, giving a special appeal to the new occupants to maintain the facilities.
“You must make sure that these facilities stand the test of time. In particular, you must be mindful of fire outbreaks which have taken a toll on offices and residential accommodations of the Ghana Armed Forces in the recent past,” he opined.
Touching on roads in the barracks, President Akufo-Addo announced that the sod would be cut next week for the commencement of construction of the phase two of Burma Camp roads. He added that all bad roads in the camp had been noted and sent to the minister, and would be worked upon.
“I have to redeem the pledge I made to you about your roads, and I am doing so,” he remarked.
Further, the President expressed gratitude to the GAF for the selflessness of its personnel during the time of the lockdown, when they were deployed to ensure the enforcement of the restriction of movement.
In particular, President Akufo-Addo commended personnel of the GAF for going all out to desilt gutters and disinfect markets and other places as part of the fight against the Coronavirus.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo seized the opportunity to remind the personnel to adhere strictly to the safety protocols, which include washing hands regularly with soap under running water.
The Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, in his remarks, said the Akufo-Addo government had so far invested over GH¢680 million into the barracks regeneration programme.
He acknowledged that the GAF had accommodation challenges, and most, if not all, of the military garrisons had seen some massive infrastructure development since the inception of the barracks regeneration programme.
Also, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major Obed Akwa, in his welcome address, said the ceremony was a commemorative one, in the realisation of the promise made by the President, of which the sod was cut in 2017 for construction to begin.
He noted that the Akufo-Addo government, since assumption of office, had been continued to equipping the three services, which has enabled the GAF to systematically evolve into a true professional, multi-purpose, and combat capable force.
