The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly Coronavirus (COVID-19) Task Force has deployed security personnel, from the police and military, to enforce the compulsory wearing of facemasks in the Metropolis to stop the spread of the pandemic.
At the Black Market area, around Market Circle, Sekondi taxi rank and Jubilee Park among other places, these security personnel were seen enforcing the directives by politely asking shoppers, passengers and drivers to wear the facemask.
It would be recalled that the Regional Security Council recently issued a statement to warn the public that the wearing of facemasks was going to be compulsory to stop the further spread of the Covid-19 disease, which had already infected 23 people in the region, with Sekondi Takoradi alone having six cases.
The Metropolitan National Disaster Management organisation (NADMO) Officer, James Obeng, said the task force was deployed to ensure compliance with the instruction on wearing of facemasks.
In a related development, the Western North Regional Security Council (WNRSC) has issued strict measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the region. The region currently has less than 10 positive cases.
As a way of stopping the spread, the Regional Security Council has also directed people to start wearing facemasks.
Additionally, the Council has suspended all special market days in the region until further notice. In a press statement signed by the Regional Minister, Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu, he directed the police and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to ensure that all passengers wear facemasks before boarding commercial vehicles.
The enforcement of the directive, according to the Minister, would take immediate effect.
The WNRSC has also directed the temporary closure of all pubs and drinking spots in the region until further notice.
