A joint statement by the Nae We, Sakumo, Korle and Dantu Wulomei (priests) has urged individuals to desist from the act of distorting the rich history of the Ga people.
According to the Wulomei, there has never been any particular time in the history of the Gas’ where somebody occupied a position known as the Overlord of the Ga State, as is being claimed by some individuals like the Nungua Gborbu Wulomo.
The statement, read by the Nae We Elder, Nii Yartey Obedru I, at a press conference held yesterday, indicated that before the adoption of chieftaincy system into the Ga tradition, there had never been any position as Overlord of Ga-Damgbe State.
The Gborbu Wulomo’s claims of being the Overlord of the Ga State, to them, is absurd, thus if what he sought to let the world believe or is anything to go by, then what becomes of the Ga Mantse.
Although he acknowledged the Gborbu Wulomo as the highest Wulomo (priest) of Nungua, nevertheless, he strongly pointed out that his superiority does not extend to the whole of the Ga-Damgbe State.
“Gborbu Wulomo has no hand in the installation of Nea Wulomo or any other high office holder within the Ga State by tradition,” he added. “The claim of [the] Gborbu Wulomo as the Overlord is never true…”
Nii Yartey Obedru I added that the any priest claiming to be the Overlord of the good people only wants to twist history.
He continued that even before the Gborbu Wulomo is installed, he is first presented to the Nae We in Ga Mashie, and after he is returned to Nungua for the final rituals to be performed, after which he shall never cross the Kpeshie Lagoon to Accra so long as he remains the Gborby Wulomo.
“We are advising the Gborbu Wulomo to please note as such for the progressiveness of the beautiful Ga State and the entire Greater Accra Region,” he urged.
Ga Paramount Stool Dzase Response
In a related development, the Ga Paramount Stool Dzaase has also issued a statement to condemn the Nungua High Priest’s claims.
The statement said the Nungua Priest’s comments were false and malicious, and that there is no iota of truth in his claim that the late Boni Nii Amugi’s refusal to perform rites at Gborbu Koo led to problems encountered during his reign, since the performance of these rites on any Ga Mantse by Nungua completes the installation processes, and that three Ga Mantsemei, in the persons of Nii Tackie Oblie, Nii Adama Latse and Nii Teiko Tsuru, have all called on him to perform the said rites.
The statement further added that the Gborbu Wulomo’s claim that he set up the Justice Crabbe Committee in consultation with the former heads of state and the current President was also not true.
“That, Eminent Personalities, comprising Archbishop Palmer Buckle, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Rev. Prof. Martey, Rev. Stephen, and HRM Drolor Bosso Adamtey I invited Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II to Peduase Lodge for discussions and he refused to attend, having agreed earlier to do so. That, Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II also refused a call by the Asantehene.
“And that, a bench warrant has been issued against Boni Nil Tackie Adama Latse for breaking into the Ga Stool Room, and wrongful acquisition of fictitious gazette.”
This, the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase, in correcting the fact, indicated that the late Boni Amugi II was installed in 1965 at the age of 25 years by the Ga Paramount Stool Dzaase, headed by the then Dzaasetse Nii Teiko Abonua II (known in Private life as Dr. C.E. Reindorf) who, during his stewardship, installed four Ga Mantsemei, i.e. Nil Tackie Oblie (reinstatement) Nii Tackie Tawiah II, Nii Takie-Komme II and Nii Amugi II.
In setting the records straight it said it was, therefore, absurd and shocking that such a Dzaasetse would refuse to send a Ga Mantse to Nungua, or precisely Gborbu Koo, for rites to be performed, if, indeed, that is the case.
“We want to put it on record that Nungua or Gborbu Wulomo do not play any role as far as the nomination, selection and installation of a person as Ga Mantse is concerned. That, the presence of the Nungua Traditional Area, like all other traditional areas, during the funeral of late Boni Nii Amugi II was purely to pay homage and last respects to a departing Ga Mantse whose jurisdiction extended to Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua and Tema by then,” the statement added.
The claims by the Gborbu Wulomo that the courts and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs could not settle the Ga Mantse matter is another falsehood, as the case in the courts were all ruled in favour of Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, however, all those rulings were not complied with and totally disregarded with impunity by the powers that be.
Also, in 2014, the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, in its ruling on the consolidated case against Dr. Joe Blankson-Lartey, provided “for the Gas to go and do the right thing.”
The obligation, therefore, fell on the petitioners, as Kingmakers, to go ahead with their functions, and, therefore, out of place for Nuumo Gborbu to claim that Dr. Joe BIankson-Lartey (who was demised then) was asked by the Judicial Committee to go and settle the matter at home.
It stated emphatically that neither the Dzaase nor Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II had ever approached the Gborbu Wulomo to perform any rites for the Ga Mantse, therefore, that claim by the Gborbu is an absolute falsehood.
“It is also shocking and surprising for the Gborbu Wulomo to allege that Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II showed disrespect to some eminent personalities by refusing to attend their call,” it added.
The statement explained that about four days to the said meeting, an invitation was sent to the Ga Mantse at a time he was indisposed, and same was communicated, and it was therefore very misleading for Nuumo Gborbu to paint that picture.
“Meanwhile, we are reliably informed that two of these eminent personalities declined the invitation by Numo Gborbu, whereas, one of these two, Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle, has come out to disclaim the unfounded allegation made by the Gborbu Wulomo, and has further directed that the Gborbu Wulomo retract and correct that claim,” it said.
