The Goaso Police Division in Ahafo Region, in a joint operation with the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly and Goaso Traditional Council, has seized a number of baskets full of dry fish belonging to market women who flouted the directive of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The baskets of fish were picked and sent to the office of the police division as a result of the market women not respecting the ban placed on all weekly market centres activities for 14 days by the REGSEC to ensure that the social distancing protocol is adhered to, and also to enable the managers of the region to put proper measures in place to help fight the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asunafo North, Osei Boahen, in a media briefing in the course of the exercise at Goaso Zongo, stated that he had a tip-off that some market women were busily engaging in their activities, so he and his team quickly stormed there, where they caught them seriously flouting the directive with.
According to the furious MCE, who was on the ground the whole day ensuring that nobody disrespects the directive, he does not understand why some people have decided not to adhere to the measures for their good, as well as others, in respect of the COVID-19.
He said several announcements have been made on all the necessary platforms to alert and explain to the traders to halt their activities at the weekly centres, but yet, some are not complying, so the law must deal with them to deter others.
Osei Boahen urged the police not to accept any form of apology from either the offenders or opinion leaders, because the virus the country is dealing with is dreadful, and with all efforts on board the country will overcome it.
He added that he and the task force, as well as the police and chiefs, were solidly behind the directive, so they would ensure they monitor the situation until the ban is lifted.
The Paramount Chief of Goaso Traditional Area, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah I, passionately spoke against what the market women did.
Nana Akwasi Bosomprah categorically emphasised that his people must know that the leaders of the region are not joking with the halting of weekly market activities, so all must adhere to avoid them being apprehended by the police.
He said for both the MCE and chiefs to be on ground the whole day under the scorching sun must inform the people that leaders will go at all lengths to ensure that Ahafo residents give total respect to the measures to maintain its record – that is not recording a case though several tests have been conducted on suspected persons.
“For the women to say sorry means they are at fault, so the law must take its course with no interference,” he said.
At the time the MCE, chiefs and the police got to the scene, the market women, who are solely into the fish business, were busy distributing their stuff disregarding the social distancing protocol.
He cautioned the people to kindly adhere to REGSEC directives to ensure that all are safe when it comes to COVID-19 issues.
