Professor Ransford Gyampo has called on the Electoral Commission to quickly think through a contingency plan, should coronavirus make it impossible for the compilation of a new voter’s register.
He said the Commission would have to plan on how to re-psyche Ghanaians to have confidence in the current register that has been highly bastardized.
Prof Gyampo told The Chronicle that there was the need for a ‘plan B’, in the wake of the spread of the virus and the schedule of the EC.
The EC had planned to commence the compilation of a new voter roll from April 18, exactly a week from today, but had to postpone indefinitely, owing to Covid-19.
But, the political science lecturer, Prof Ransford Gyampo, wants the EC to work with stakeholders to decide on the way out.
“The Electoral Commission must work with its key stakeholders to decide on the modalities to carry out its intention, in the wake of the spreading of Covid-19.
“However, it is plausible to also reason that, Covid-19 constitutes enough force majeure, that makes a compelling case for abandoning the intention to compile a new voters’ register.
“If the latter is the case, then the Electoral Commission must quickly think through a contingency plan, to re-psyche and whip up public confidence in the old register that has been bastardized through the utterances of Commission itself, and other stakeholders,” he remarked.
