The Management of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Driver (DVLA) says the price of the new Smart Driver’s Licence is still being discussed and that the public will be duly informed when a decision is taken.
A statement issued in Accra over the weekend and signed by Mr Kwasi Agyeman Busia, the Chief Executive Officer, said management was sensitive to the concerns of customers and will, therefore, come up with an affordable price. The following is the full statement;
The attention of the management of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has been drawn to speculations by certain groups of people pertaining to the cost of the new Smart Driver’s Licence about to be launched and how the Authority intends to manage the old and new Licenses.
Management wishes to explain that the price of the new Smart Driver’s License is still being discussed and the public will be duly informed when a decision is made. Management assures of its sensitivity to the concerns of our customers and will, therefore, come up with an affordable price.
Management again wishes to explain that the Smart Driver’s License that will be issued after the launch of the product will be used side-by-side with the old License, until the old one expires and the customer is issued with a new licence. Besides, the new License will be issued under the following conditions:
- When a customer misplaces his/her license
- When a customer applies for a foreign license to be converted to a local one
- When a license becomes completely defaced, and
- When an applicant successfully goes through a license upgrade.
In addition to those legally mandated occasions when Authority would have no choice than to issue a new Smart Driver’s License to customers, all customers who voluntarily decide to change the old license for a new one, in order to enjoy the benefits that will accrue from the use of the Smart Driver’s License, will be given the opportunity to do so and will pay a reasonable amount that is being currently discussed.
Last but not the least, management wishes to explain that it was still in the process of putting strategies together to adequately educate all its major stakeholders as well as the general public when information on the new smart Driver’s License inadvertently got to the press.
Management assures that it will do everything possible to ensure that all Ghanaians, especially our major stakeholders, are effectively engaged and educated before the launch of the new smart driver’s license.

Negligence at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital
Central Regional Teaching Hospital (Cape Coast Teaching Hospital), which is popularly known as Interburton, is the pride of the region.
However, the attitude of some health professionals threatens the confidence and pride patrons have in the hospital. Patients who are in dire need of their services are often frustrated.
My personal experience was when my baby was severely sick and visited the hospital.
On that faithful day, I rushed to the emergency ward with my seriously sick child, but to my surprise there were some doctors chatting and just looking on, as I shouted and begged them to help me.
Upon all my calls for help, none of them came to my aid until a Good Samaritan Doctor, who saw how helpless I was, attended to us and that saved my child.
Again, a patient was neglected when a doctor instructed a midwife to prepare her for surgery. She, however, went on to do her own thing instead of adhering to the doctor’s instruction, which nearly cost the life of the patient.
The neglect was extended to one of their own, a Senior Nurse, who a doctor mistook as an “ordinary person”.
The said patient underwent a surgical operation (evacuation of the feutus after a miscarriage). Unfortunately, she was not given any anesthesia (substance to relieve pain).
As the surgery was on-going, the patient could not withstand the pain and protested, but this rather infuriated the doctor, who threatened to leave her in that situation. True to his word, the doctor left her in that condition.
These and many others, which went on unnoticed have resulted in the death of breadwinners in many families. Pathetically, these medical professionals are usually left unpunished.
I am, therefore, appealing to the Ministry of Health to monitor the activities of some Medical Officers at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in order to get rid of those unprofessional doctors from the hospital, so as to save the image of this enviable health facility.
