The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the Melcom Group of Companies, Melcom Care Foundation, has donated to the female and male inmates of Nsawam and Sekondi prisons, basic items and clothes.
The donation was a result of complaints received from the Prisons Service, individuals and ex-convicts about the need to support them have access to relief items that would make their lives a bit more comfortable.
Rev. Mrs Kate Antwi, who received the items on behalf of Nsawam male inmates, said the service was doing what it can to assist the inmates, however, their efforts would be meaningless if the public does not support them.
She said, though each inmate is entitled GH¢1.30, the government has still placed a five percent tax component on the amount, which affects how the prisoners are fed.
Poor feeding, coupled with overcrowding of the prisons cells, she noted, affects the health of the inmates, and thanked Melcom for the kind gesture.
The representative for the Sekondi female inmates was a Barrister, who gave his name as Rev. Ntarko, with the Africa Center for International Law and Accountability.
He said interest was to ensure that the needs of the inmates are attended to, and also the provision of vocational skills, and continued support, to help them integrate successfully back into society.
He also added that they aim was to see to it that suspects on remand cases are heard before the court. He also thanked Melcom, and promised to make sure the inmates accessed the items.
Melcom Care, on the same day, donated cash and basic needs, an LG Home theater and Tefal items to a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology student, Felix Kwakye, the Kokrokoo Charity-Kwami Sega Kayi Foundation, and Oceans Broadcasting.
