A 20-member neighborhood watch committee has been inaugurated to serve the Bofaaso and Pamuruso communities in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The trained community volunteers, who are to work without monetary gain, resolved to make the Bofaaso and Pamuruso communities safer by assisting the police in Nyinahin to combat crime.
The Assembly Member for Chirayaaso Electoral Area of the Atwima Mponua District, Kofi Sarpong, called on the police command to ensure that the two communities enjoy peace.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christian Dogbatse, at the inauguration, reminded them to play complementary roles with the police in the fight against armed robbery and stealing in district.
He advised them to live beyond reproach, and not to involve themselves in any form of criminality, so as to earn the respect and trust of the community members.
According to him, every person is equal before the law, therefore, they must not discriminate in their approach to duty.
The Police Commander also advised them against the use of guns, brutalising suspects and infringing on their rights, saying all suspects are innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
ASP Dogbatse spelt out their mandate as policing the community by vigorous patrols, arresting suspects and handing them over to the police for investigation and prosecution, and challenged them to avoid the temptation of settling cases among themselves for monetary gain.
He assured them of the readiness of the police to defend them at all times against criminals and other miscreants who would see their work as an obstacle to their nefarious activities, and would want to do anything possible to discourage them.
Nana Kusi Asante, Chief of Bofaaso, said the residents in the communities can now heave a sigh of relief, knowing that their properties are safe from theft and robbery, noting that the activities of illegal chainsaw operators, who plunder their forests, will soon be a thing of the past.
The Chief promised to support the sacrificial work of the members of the watchdog committee to serve as a moral booster to the volunteers.
He advised them to desist from drinking, which could cloud their sense of judgment in handling information, saying loose talk could make them a target in the communities and put their lives at risk, while cautioning them against sitting in drinking spots to discuss their operations, since they may not know who is eavesdropping.
