From Sebastian R. Freiku, Kumasi
Mr. Charles Bawuah, Assembly Member for the Adako Jachie/Abankro electoral area in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has appealed to President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fast track the appointment of chief executives for the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
According to him, doing so will enable the assemblies, especially that of the Ejisu- Juaben Municipality, to recover from the leadership deficit it suffered under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
The Assembly Member reminded the government to be guided by the new Local Government law, which has come as a revision of Act 462 of the 1992 Constitution, in appointing heads of the various MMDAs across the country.
He emphasised that the law sets out the criteria regarding government appointees, who are capable of bringing on board technical expertise and social innovations for the development of the assemblies.
Charles Bawuah bemoaned that previous governments have paid less attention to the provisions of the said Local Government law, resulting in polarised assembly composition, pointing out that the current status quo of appointing assembly representatives, based on one’s affiliation to the party in power, is a deviation from the provision on appointments.
Charles Bawuah, who is a member of the Municipal Finance and Administration and convener of Culture and Tourism sub-committees of the assembly, further argued that such political appointees contribute very little, or nothing at all, to the development process of the very communities in which they live, let alone, the assemblies, adding that such a practice is a recipe for disaster to good local governance.
He, therefore, advised the government to desist from the unpopular exercise, in order to realizse the full potential of the decentralisation process of the country.
