From Samuel Agbewode, Ho.
The outgoing President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, has attributed the continuous departure of most Ghanaians from the country, to the unprecedented rate of unhappiness they are clothed with.
The lack of happiness, which he said was traceable to lack of jobs and basic amenities, compelled them to search for greener pastures abroad, since government was not living up to its task of creating wealth, which would translate into smiles on their faces.
Citing the United Arab Emirates, a revered Togbe Afede revealed that the country had created a ministry which was in charge of happiness, thereby enabling their citizens to receive some appreciable level of satisfaction from the state.
The Paramount Chief made these comments when the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, called on him at his Ho palace over the weekend.
He expressed worry that instead of throwing the searchlight on activities which would boost the development of the private sector, regarded as the engine of growth of every economy, the government’s interest laid with activities that would plunge private business initiatives into frustration.
Insisting that it was the duty of government to promote private sector development, Togbe Afede thus advised the Mahama-led administration to halt the hijacking of private initiatives, since its target for destruction was disastrous to the country.
He also commented on the political dimension of the country, saying the association of selfishness and greed with politics in Ghana, where winners made life more interesting and comfortable for themselves, was not the best.
Togbe Afede pointed out that the law that prevented chiefs from active participation in politics did not ban them from talking about the development challenges confronting the people in their respective areas.
“Chiefs will continue to talk about the development needs of their people. The chiefs will talk about poor income levels of their people, jobs, enhanced standard of living and the need for the citizens to live happily because happy people would enjoy peace and stability…if a nation does not guarantee happiness to its people, the nation cannot be peaceful and progressive,” he noted.
Touching on tribal politics, the paramount chief told Nana Akufo Addo that, the time had come for Ghanaians, particularly the people in the Volta region to avoid tribal and ethnic politics during general elections but instead, vote on issues that would help bring development to them.
Likening the region to a woman, Togbe Afede told his guests that, “the Volta region is like a beautiful bride waiting for the right suitor and not like a loyal house wife waiting for her husband who would only come home when he is hungry.”
Togbe Afede had a word of caution for Ghanaians ahead of the December polls: “Nobody should attempt to kill him or herself for a political party and votes should not be based on where we come from, but votes ought to be based on our development needs.
“No party should attempt to rig the election because that would lead to chaos and elections should be free and fair, fairness is the key.”
On his part, the NPP Presidential Candidate thanked the chiefs and people of the Volta region for the warm reception offered him during his five-day campaign tour, as he called for a renewed working relationship with the people of the Volta region.
He, therefore, appealed to the people to vote massively for him and the NPP in the 2016 general elections to enable the party to assume governance of the country so it could rescue the people from their development challenges and hardships.
Nana Addo recalled that during the era of former President Kufuor, the people of the Volta region benefited much from development projects, pledging his resolve to build on from where the former president left off.
The NPP flag bearer stated that during his tour of the region, it was evident that the “’World Bank’ of the NDC deserves much development than it is today,” hence his assurance of development to an appreciable level in the region, when given the nod.
