The move was meant to augment local demand for rice was implemented as Ghana’s self-sufficiency of rice production was still low at around 30 percent leaving a deficit of 70 percent to cover.
Minister in charge of Crops at the Ministry of Food Agriculture speaking at a national workshop on rice and aquaculture productivity in Accra August 9, 2010 pointed that per capita consumption of rice had witnessed an increase hence affecting local demand for rice.
He further noted that rice had become a major food security crop which was of significant importance to Ghana.
