Sackey, who defeated Kenya’s Michael Nyawade to win the continental crown for the second time, said he was working tirelessly to make his title defence early next year before targeting a world title shot.
The 26-year-old Ghanaian fighter returned to the ring with a unanimous decision victory over Nyawade in a competition which was headlined by former world champion Joseph Agbeko for the first time following his controversial defeat to Wasiru Mohammed last year.
In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Sackey said he was hopeful of making strides in 2020 with an ambition of fighting in a world championship bout by close of the year.
“It has been a good year for me and I am glad to finish it off with the WBO Africa title. It is big news for me because of what happened in my last fight with Wasiru Mohammed.
“Now that I have my title back, the focus will be to make a defence early next year and we look forward to a world championship by the close of 2020,” he said.
Sackey was controversially stopped by Wasiru during his first title defence at the Bukom Boxing Arena which led to his camp petitioning the WBO over referee Adorn Bertin’s conduct.
The WBO ruled in favour of Wasiru as the winner on the night but called for both camps to agree to a rematch which failed to materialise due to disagreements in the negotiation.
Sackey, however, had the chance to fight for a vacant belt following Wasiru’s decision to vacate the title after defeating Loren Japhet to win the WBO Global. Read Full Story
